I have wanted to know how to REALLY do CPR for as long as I can remember. I mean…we all think we can do CPR because we see it on TV and in the movies (Hi, my name is Julie and I’m a Grey’s Anatomy addict….), but when was the last time you saw it in real life? Thankfully, I haven’t – so I decided to get CPR certified as part of my 30 Before 30 list.
I registered for the class through the local township adult school, and attended a 2-hour class on a weeknight at the nearby high school. The woman that taught the class was a sweetheart, and with only 5 of us being there, we each got a lot of time with the mannequins:
We even got to act out possible scenarios that CPR may be needed in – like someone collapsing in the mall, or a student in a school that stops breathing. I especially appreciated our teacher explaining that we should pump a person’s chest to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” by the BeeGees in order to get the right amount of beats per minute. Man, can that song get stuck in your head!
After my two hour class, I felt accomplished, but I had nothing to show for it – we had to wait for our certifications to be mailed out to us. I was SO excited when it finally came because I felt like it wasn’t official until I had it in my hand!
As quick of a process as it was, I’m very glad that I went through it. If one of my students ever needs help, I will now feel confident in the fact that I know how to help them in the correct way. CPR certification – check!! =)
Are you CPR certified? Why did you decide to go through the process?
