It’s a Celebration!

I almost didn’t realize it….that’s how much it has become second-nature to me. Yesterday marked my first six months as a vegan!

Vegan

If you look back at the beginning of my journey, I took small steps before I got to this point. First giving up dairy because of lactose intolerance, then giving up meat for Lent as an experiment, and finally giving up eggs and fish after doing my own research and watching documentaries such as Forks Over Knives. On April 25th, 2012 I made the executive decision that to adopt a vegan lifestyle. The thing that set me over the edge was a sushi dinner – it tasted fine, but I just didn’t feel good mentally and emotionally after eating it. Sushi had, at one time, been one of my favorite meals. That’s when I KNEW that something had to change.

Originally, I made the switch for health reasons. Dairy was making me ill to the point that it interfered with my daily life and I was beyond sluggish, always tired, and always sick. Switching to a plant-based diet changed all of that for me! I soon found out, however, that being vegan isn’t just a diet change….it’s a lifestyle. I did more research into animal cruelty in the food industry, reading numerous articles and watching countless videos and documentaries that brought me to tears. I began to understand exactly why vegans are so incredibly passionate about their choices. The thing that cemented it the most for me was my visit to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary this past summer….I fell in love with those animals and their stories and I knew that I could never go back to harming them for an unnecessary diet.

Adopting a vegan lifestyle has also meant changing some of the products that I have used in the past to things that are not made with animal ingredients and are not tested on animals. I’ve actually enjoyed finding companies and brands that really disagree with animal testing, and it feels so great knowing that I support them.

Along with my new lifestyle, I decided to add a new friend to my life….Patches, the English spot bunny! She has been such an awesome addition to my every day routine, and she has been a constant source of comedic relief and snuggles! I had no idea how calming just sitting and petting a bunny could be! Coincidentally, Patches turned 6 months old yesterday! I love that we share a such a great day!

The last 6 months have been life changing – physically, mentally, and emotionally. I can honestly say that adopting a vegan lifestyle was one of the best choices that I’ve made for myself! I am super excited for all of the adventures that are yet to come, and recipes that have yet to be cooked. Thanks for following my journey so far….looking forward to sharing the rest with you!  =)
